BLACKBERRY CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening (Crisco or butter)
2 c. brown sugar
3 eggs
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda, dissolved in milk
1 c. blackberry jam (or sweetened berries)
2 1/3 c. flour
1 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cloves

Cream shortening and sugar. Blend in eggs. Sift flour and spices together. Add alternately with buttermilk. Add soda. Stir in jam or berries. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until done.
