SPECIAL CARAMEL CAKE 
2 sticks butter
1/2 c. Snow Drift shortening
3 c. sugar
6 eggs
3 c. cake flour
3/4 tsp. baking powder
1 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream sugar and butter; add eggs, one at a time. Add vanilla. Measure and sift baking powder into flour. Add milk and flour alternately. Add flour first and last. Bake at 350 degrees in 11 x 14 inch pan. (Shrinks slightly from sides of pan and is brown.) Cool 10 minutes and turn out on flat tray. Frost with icing as follows.

CARAMEL ICING:

2 c. sugar
1 c. whipping cream

Bring this to a boil and at same time, caramelize 1/2 cup sugar in small heavy skillet. (Stir until sugar melts and is brown.) Stir into first mixture. Boil to medium ball stage; remove from heat and add 1/2 cup butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Beat to spreading consistency.
