BEEF STEW IN WINE SAUCE 
1 1/2 lb. beef, chuck, cut up
1 tbsp. shortening
1 toe minced garlic
1 chopped onion
1 can condensed tomato soup
1/4 c. water
3/4 c. sweet red wine
Pepper
1/4 tsp. basil
1/4 tsp. thyme
1/2 c. ketchup
1 c. or more of each carrot, celery, and potato

Brown beef in shortening. Add garlic and onion. Saute until transparent. Stir in soup, wine, and water. Cover and simmer about 30 minutes. Add herbs, ketchup, and vegetables. Cover and simmer about 1 1/2 hours or until tender. Stir often. Add more water if necessary.
