A PLAIN CAKE 
1/4 c. shortening
3/4 c. sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Cream the butter and sugar. Beat the egg yolks until it is thick and have a lemon color. Add this to the butter and sugar. Sift together remaining dry ingredients. Add these alternately with milk beating thoroughly. Flavor with vanilla. Beat the egg white stiff and fold into the batter. Bake in the oven in a loaf pan for 45 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees.
