AUNT BERTHA'S BREAD | |
2 yeast cakes 1/2 c. lukewarm water 2 c. milk 1 tbsp. butter 1 tbsp. butter 1 tbsp. salt 2 tbsp. sugar 7 c. flour Mix and dissolve yeast in water and set aside. In saucepan mix milk and butter, butter, salt and sugar. Cook over low heat until comes almost to boil. Cool in pan of cold water. Add ingredients together. Pour slowly into flour. Stir. Put on floured board, knead until elastic consistency. Pat into a big ball. Rub a little butter over top and cover with a damp towel. Keep in a warm room. Let rise 1 hour. Push down. Let rise 1 hour again. Form into loaves and place in bread pans. Let rise 1 hour covered. Bake 1 hour and 10 minutes at 325 degrees. Remove. Wrap in damp towel. Makes a delicious heavy bread and crispy detectable toast. |
