OLD - FASHIONED YELLOW CAKE 
3/4 tsp. baking soda
3/4 c. buttermilk
1/3 c. shortening
1/4 c. butter
1 c. sugar
3 eggs
2 tbsp. cornstarch
2 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
Pinch of salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Combine baking soda with buttermilk and set aside.

In a large mixing bowl cream butter, shortening and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add cornstarch, beat well.

Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Add alternately with buttermilk to creamed mixture; add vanilla. Pour into 2 greased and floured 9 inch round pans.

Bake at 350°F for 25-30 minutes. Frost with Butter Cream Frosting.
