APPLE-DATE BREAD 
1 1/2 c. water
1 c. raisins
2/3 c. chopped apples
2/3 c. chopped dates
2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sugar
1 tbsp. shortening
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. flour

In saucepan combine water, raisins, apples and dates. Boil, add soda. Let cool. Cream together sugar, shortening, egg and vanilla. Add flour and fruit mixture to sugar mixture alternately. Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees.
