MRS. COLSON'S SPICE CAKE 
3/4 c. butter
2 1/2 c. sifted cake flour
1 c. granulated sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 tsp. cloves
3/4 c. brown sugar
1 c. buttermilk
3 eggs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Stir shortening to soften; sift in flour. Stir in granulated sugar, baking powder, soda, cinnamon and cloves. Add brown sugar and milk; mix until all of the flour is dampened. Beat at high speed with mixer for 2 minutes, add eggs, beat two minutes longer. Spray two 9-inch layer pans with non-stick coating or grease and flour. Pour batter into pans and bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until cake tests done. Frost with penuche icing.

PENUCHE ICING:

1/2 c. butter
1 c. light brown sugar, packed
1/4 c. milk
1 1/2 c. confectioners' sugar

Melt butter; add brown sugar; boil mixture over low heat for 2 minutes. Stir in milk and let cool. Add enough confectioners' sugar until icing is the right consistency for spreading.
