MOM'S DATE NUT CAKE 
1 c. boiling water
1 c. chopped dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sugar
1/4 c. butter
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Pour boiling water over dates and soda; let stand while mixing cake. Cream butter and sugar; add eggs and vanilla. Mix well; add sifted flour, baking powder and salt. Fold in nuts and date mixture. Bake in 9 x 12 pan for 35 minutes.

ORANGE ICING:

5 tbsp. brown sugar
5 tsp. cream
2 tsp. butter
2 tbsp. orange juice

Boil 3 minutes; pour on cake while still warm. Can be sprinkled with chopped coconut or nuts or served as is with whipped cream or ice cream.
