CHARLOTTE B. SCOTT'S BLACK AND
WHITE SQUARES
 
2 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 c. Crisco solid shortening
4 eggs
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. chopped walnuts
2 sq. baking chocolate (melted)

Melt chocolate, set aside for later. Cream together sugar, vanilla and shortening. Add eggs, one at a time. Add flour gradually. Add salt and walnuts. Spread 1/2 batter into lightly greased 9 x 13 pan. Add chocolate to remaining batter and spread as a second layer. Bake for 25 minutes or until completely done in middle. Bake at 350 degrees.
