DATE OATMEAL BARS 
2 c. finely cut dates (I use 1 lb. pkg.)
1 1/2 c. brown sugar
1 tbsp. flour
1 c. hot water
1 tsp. vanilla
Walnuts
1 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
2 c. quick cooking rolled oats
3/4 c. melted butter or shortening
(I use 1 stick butter & shortening)

Combine dates, 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1 tablespoon flour. Add water; simmer 10 minutes or until thickened. Stir in vanilla and walnuts.

Combine remaining 1 cup brown sugar with 1 cup flour, baking soda and oats. Add melted butter, flour, baking soda and oats. Add melted butter gradually while stirring. Spread 1/2 oatmeal mixture in greased pan, cover with date mixture then sprinkle with remaining oatmeal mixture. Pat with spoon. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Cool in pan.
