MOTHER'S RED DEVILS FOOD CAKE 
1 egg
1 c. sugar
1/4 c. shortening
1/2 c. sour milk
2 tbsp. cocoa
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 1/2 c. boiling water

Cream sugar and shortening, add egg and mix well. Add sour milk and mix. Make cocoa into paste with small amount of water and add to batter. Add salt, flour and vanilla. Mix well. Add soda dissolved in boiling water. Batter will be thin. Bake in 9x9 inch square pan for 30-35 minutes at 350 degrees.
