Not having tried this recipe I didn't not rate it. BUT it is very similar to one that I make quite often and I would like to suggest adding a tin of tomato soup near the end of the cooking time. Makes all the difference in the world!

Anybody use ham hocks too by chance?

This recipe is perfect... if you use Navy Beans, there is no need to soak them; just follow the recipe just as it is and adjust the cooking time based on when you actually start simmering and you will be fine!

I love it. Grow up eating it twice a day. Add some fried cornbread. Just cornbread batter fried in bacon grease instead of baked. Also, substitute pintos for navy beans. For you Yankees, try cow beans.

This man knows how to make and eat soup beans for us Southerners and bean soup for Yankees. Yes, ya gotta have fried "hot water cornbread" too.

I made this tonight from a meaty ham bone. It was delicious. I added some potato for the last hour of cooking, a bit of thyme, a bit more salt and a few dashes of hot sauce. Mmmmmm, mmmmmm, good! Also, you need to take the ham bone out after the first two hours, cut off the meat, chop it and return it to the soup.

Great recipe! I am tweaking it of course. ... and those who say you don't have to soak the beans..... you better be comfortable with your mate, the cannon will go off :0)

 Robin (Virginia) says:
Delicious - I sauteed the veggies, first, and added two bay leaves. As stated by others it doesn't take the additional two hours, so test the beans, periodically. A real winner.

I'm making this now. Hefty snow and cold here in Michigan so pretty sure it will be gone in no time.

Loved the recipe. Added 2 tablespoons of bacon fat/grease, with crumbled bacon pieces... Embarrassed to say that my wife and I ate the entire pot full through out the cold day today... Absolutely wonderful. (don't forget the cornbread)

This is a good recipe. I sauteed the vegetables in butter first, which makes the broth richer. Also try soaking the beans in apple cider vinegar first. This helps with the "gas" problem later!
