APPLESAUCE CAKE 
1 1/4 c. cake flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 tsp. salt
1/3-1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg, unbeaten
1 c. unsweetened, tart applesauce (or canned)
1 c. seedless raisins
Nuts & cherries as desired

Sift flour, measure and resift 3 times with soda, spices and salt. Cream shortening well and gradually blend in sugar. Add egg and beat until light and fluffy; then stir in applesauce. Add flour mixture in 3 portions until well blended. Stir in raisins, turn into cake pan (8 inch square) lined with thin, plain paper in bottom.
