SALTINE CRACKER TOFFEE
Saltines (crackers)
1 cup (2 sticks) butter
2 cups brown sugar
1 (12 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 400°F.

Lay crackers side by side in 10x15-inch jelly roll pan (cookie sheet with edge).

Bring butter and sugar to boil and continue boiling until soft ball stage (234°F to 240°F on candy thermometer).

Pour toffee over crackers.

Bake in preheated oven for 5 to 7 minutes. Watch carefully so it doesn't burn.

Sprinkle chips over toffee/crackers and return to oven for another 30 seconds or until chips melt.

Cool to set and harden. Crack and enjoy!

Bulldog Variation: Substitute saltines for graham crackers!

Cooks Note: Use of a candy thermometer is recommended.

 Karen says:
My family and their friends loves these. I have tried something different and use pretzel pieces and they are delicious. Very addicting!

I've made these quite a few times and they are delicious!! Make sure you never use wax paper thinking they won't stick... bad mistake! I ruined a whole batch!! I use a mix of semi-sweet and milk chocolate chips, and I use a nut topping with a little added sea salt to top it. Just be careful, because these are very addictive!!

I've made these candies several times to great reviews. I usually use white sugar with chocolate chips and walnuts and brown sugar with butterscotch chipsand pecans.

Fun2bemum - Are you using a non-stick pan? The butter doesn't melt very well that way.

I first made this with a friend when we were teenagers...over 35 years ago. Where has the time gone.

 Amy (Missouri) says:
Mine spilled over into the oven, so next time I'll use a deeper pan.

Great recipe, I always switch it up, topping with a mix of nuts, or sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries and roasted soy nuts. The perfect holiday gift.

 Sandy (Minnesota) says:
I made these last year and will be making them again soon. They are the best treat in the world! And, as others have said, are very addicting...no one can eat just one. So great for gift giving to save temptation of eating it all!

 Dennis (California) says:
Making these as Christmas gifts. I boxed them up with wax paper around them. My question is should I store them in the refrigerator or not. I don't want the crackers to get soggy.

 Deb (Michigan) says:
These are delicious!! I use choc chips and chopped up peppermint Hershey kisses and swirled them together after they melt, yummy. My family really like the choc chip and peanut butter chip combo also.
I put this on parchment paper to bake, no mess what so ever!! Worked perfect!

No need to add corrections in reviews. You can submit your own recipe with whatever you do thats different. No need to try and change the name. They are whatever your family calls them!

Tried to make these many times, but it was a FLOP!!! Finally, I realized I needed to use butter and NOT margarine!
