FRESH APPLE (PEAR) DANISH 
6 apples or pears, cored and sliced
3 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 c. shortening
1 egg, separated
Milk
3/4 c. cornflake crumbs
3/4 c. sugar
2 tsp. cinnamon

VANILLA ICING:

1 c. powdered sugar
3 tbsp. water
1 tsp. vanilla

Sift flour and salt into large bowl. Cut in shortening until crumbly. Beat egg yolk; add milk to make 1/2 cup. Stir into flour mixture and mix until moistened.

Divide dough in half. Roll 1/2 of dough to line bottom and sides of a 15x10 baking pan. Sprinkle with cornflake crumbs. Arrange apple (or pear) slices over crumbs. Combine sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over fruit.

Roll out remaining dough and arrange over top. Seal edges and cut vents for steam to escape. Beat reserved egg white until stiff and brush over pastry. Bake at 375 degrees for 1 hour. Spread with icing while still warm.
