1/2 c. shortening
2 1/4 c. sifted flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/3 c. sugar
1 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
3 egg whites

Stir shortening until soft. Sift and measure flour. Sift with remaining dry ingredients over shortening. Add 3/4 cup milk and vanilla; mix. Beat 2 minutes. Add remaining milk and egg whites; mix. Beat 2 minutes.

Bake in 2 greased and floured 8-inch round pans at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
