CHALLAH BREAD | |
2 pkgs. yeast 2 c. warm water 2 tbsp. sugar 4 tsp. salt 1/4 c. oil 3 eggs, slightly beaten 6 to 7 c. flour 6 drops yellow food coloring 1 egg for glaze Dissolve yeast in water. Add rest of ingredients EXCEPT flour. Mix. Add 4 cups of flour and mix well. Add more flour to make workable dough. Knead until smooth and elastic. Turn into oiled bowl, cover and let rise until doubled (about 2 hours). Punch down. Divide dough in half. Cut each half in 3 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a strip 15 inches. Place 3 strips on greased baking sheet. Braid, fastening strips securely at both ends. Cover. Let rise until doubled (1 to 1 1/2 hours). Mix egg yolk from last egg with 2 teaspoons water. Brush top and sides with egg glaze. Bake in 350 degree oven for 30 to 40 minutes. If both pans won't fit on same shelf, switch after 20 minutes. |
