2 c. brown sugar
2 c. hot water
2 tsp. shortening
1/4 to 1/2 c. raisins
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. cloves
3 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 2 tsp. hot water

Mix brown sugar, 2 cups hot water and shortening in a medium sized saucepan. Add raisins, salt, cinnamon and cloves and boil this for five minutes after it first bubbles. Remove it from the stove and let cool. After cooling (be sure it cools completely this is very important). Add flour and baking soda dissolved in water. Mix well. Pour into a greased tube pan and bake for one hour at 350 degrees.
