Bake in 1 (8 x 8 inch) pan at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes.

1 3/4 c. sifted cake flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt (optional)
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar (may cut in half)
1 egg, beaten
2 lg. McIntosh apples, cut in small pieces

Sift flour, soda, salt and spices together 3 times. Cream shortening with sugar until fluffy. Add eggs, beat thoroughly. Add sifted dry ingredients in small amounts beating after each addition. Pour into greased pan. Add cut up pieces of apple and push into dough. Bake.
