1 c. boiling water
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
1 3/4 c. sifted flour

Sift together flour, cocoa, soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture alternately with date mixture. Beat after each addition.

Spread in a greased 9x13 pan. Sprinkle with the chocolate chips and walnuts on top. Bake at 350 degrees 40-45 minutes. Cool in the pan and cut in squares.
