COLONIAL DATE NUT BREAD 
1 1/2 c. dates, cut-up
2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. butter
1 c. boiling water
2 c. all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
3/4 c. nuts, chopped

Combine dates, baking soda and butter. Pour boiling water over and cool. Add flour, salt, sugar, egg and vanilla. Beat thoroughly for 1 minute. Stir in nuts. Pour batter into a well greased loaf pan. Bake at 350°F for 50 to 60 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes before removing from pan. Cool on rack.
