MERINGUE BARS 
1 c. shortening
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
3 egg yolks
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. sifted flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 pkg. chocolate bits, semi-sweet

TOPPING:

1 c. brown sugar
3 egg whites, beaten stiff

Cream shortening and sugars. Add egg yolks and vanilla. Mix thoroughly. Add sifted flour, salt, soda and baking powder. Mix. Pat dough into greased 9 x 13 inch pan. Sprinkle chocolate bits over top and pat firmly into dough.

Beat egg whites stiff then add brown sugar. Spread over top. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes.
