DEBBIE'S EASY BUTTERCREAM ICING 
1 (1 lb.) box confectioners' sugar
4 tbsp. milk or light cream
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened

Soften butter to room temperature (do not heat). Mix all ingredients together, adding sugar as needed to spreading consistency - just on the verve of being a little pasty.

Variation: For chocolate icing, add cocoa to taste, cutting back on confectioners' sugar.
