CHRISTMAS TREE BREAD | |
1 pkg. active dry yeast 1/2 c. warm water (105-115 degrees) 3/4 c. lukewarm milk 1/4 c. brown sugar 1/4 c. softened butter 1 tsp. salt 1 egg 2 c. white flour 1 1/2 c. whole wheat flour Dissolve yeast in warm water. Stir in milk, sugar, butter, salt, egg and white flour. Beat until smooth. Mix in remaining flour until dough is easy to handle. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and knead about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in greased bowl, turn greased side up, cover, let rise 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until double. Lightly grease cookie sheet. Have your child shape dough into 1 1/2 inch balls, 34 in all. To form tree, place 5 balls in a row on sheet. Then 4, then 3, 2, then 1. Shape 2 balls together to form trunk. Makes two 10 inch trees. Cover, let rise 15-30 minutes. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Bake 20 minutes or until golden brown. Children may decorate with piped icing for garland and candied fruit for ornaments. |
