CHEWY OATMEAL COOKIES 
1 c. flour
3/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
3/4 c. shortening
1 1/3 c. firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. oats, uncooked
1 c. raisins

Sift together flour, soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add shortening, sugar, eggs, and vanilla; beat until smooth. Stir in oats and raisins.

Drop by heaping teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 12-15 minutes. Bake about 6 minutes on bottom shelf and 6 minutes on top shelf. Take them out when they look not quite done. They sink in the middle. Yield 3 1/2 to 4 dozen.

The longer they bake, the harder they get.
