FINNISH COFFEE BREAD | |
2 c. milk 1/4 lb. butter 3/4 c. sugar 1 tsp. salt 1 1/2 c. flour 4 eggs 1 tsp. cardamom seed, crushed 1 cake yeast heat the milk (scald) and mix with sugar, butter and salt. Let cool until lukewarm. Add yeast and let stand about 5 minutes. Add flour so that it does not make too firm a dough, and let rise in a warm place. Then add eggs and cardamom. Knead it with a little more flour. Let rise again. When well risen, shape in into 2 braids. Into pan, let rise. Bake at 350 degrees F. for 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from pan; cool; melt powdered sugar with water to make glaze. Pour over bread - zig zag. Slice; serve with coffee. |
