DELICIOUS BROWN BEEF STEW 
1 1/2 lb. beef, cut in 1 1/2-inch cubes
4 tbsp. flour
2 tbsp. fat (to brown meat)
3 tbsp. onion, chopped
1 1/2 c. boiling water
1 1/2 c. canned tomatoes
1 bay leaf
4 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
4 or more potatoes, quartered
6 or more carrots, quartered
6 sm. onions
1 pkg. frozen Italian style green beans

Roll meat in flour. Put fat in large kettle over medium heat and brown meat slowly on all sides. Brown chopped onion along with the meat. Add water slowly, then tomatoes, bay leaf, salt and pepper. Cover tightly and simmer over low heat at least 1 1/2 hours.

Add pared potatoes, carrots and onions. Cover and cook about 35 minutes longer or until vegetables and meat are tender. Add frozen beans 15 minutes before stew is done.
