1/2 c. soft shortening (part butter)
1 c. brown sugar, packed
1 egg
1 3/4 c. sifted flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Mix well shortening, sugar, egg and vanilla. Sift together and stir in flour, salt and soda. Form into roll 2 1/2 inches across. Wrap in waxed paper. Chill until firm. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Slice cookied dough 1/8 inch thick. Bake 8 to 10 minutes on ungreased baking sheet.

OPTIONAL: You may add 1 square chocolate, melted or nuts.
