1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sour or buttermilk
1 c. chopped raisins
2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
Pinch of salt

Cream sugar and shortening together. Sift the dry ingredients together and alternate with the milk to the sugar and shortening mixture. Add the raisins. Bake in a loaf cake pan in a moderate oven.

To make "Applesauce Cake" add 1 cup applesauce to the recipe.
