2 c. flour
2 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
3 tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
1 stick butter
1 c. water
2 eggs, well beaten
1/2 c. buttermilk

Sift flour, measure, resift with sugar and salt. Place butter, shortening, water and cocoa in saucepan, bring to boil; pour over flour and sugar mixture. Place eggs, soda, buttermilk, and vanilla in another bowl. Mix and add to first mixture. Mix well. Pour in greased and floured shallow 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 1 inch pan. Bake 20 minutes at 350 degrees. Mix 1/2 cup milk with 1/2 teaspoon vinegar if buttermilk is not available.

ICING:

1 stick butter
3 tbsp. cocoa
6 tbsp. milk
1 box powdered sugar
1/2 c. chopped nuts
1 tsp. vanilla
