I got this recipe from my daughter. She is making them for her husband for Valentines Day. We all love them and I am glad to see the varieties. Will try some of them. Soon

When I was little, my great grandmother would make these for us. She would freeze them in sandwich baggies so that each child would get their own little bag to take home from visits. We called them PatPat cookies (thats what we called her). She has been gone for almost 20 years and these cookies are like my childhood in a baggie. I still think they are best frozen!

I loved many foods my high school lunch ladies prepared, but this cookie was my favorite. I found them several years ago, much to my pleasure.

Reading the comments, I learned how this is a forgiving recipe that will tolerate tweaking.

Lately I have been including coconut products in every dish and I will make these tomarrow. But I will be using coconut oil, coconut meat, coconut milk and coconut sugar and this will be healthy in many ways, including good for diabetics.

Has anyone added red hots yet?

GREAT RECIPE! You really can't go wrong. 1/2 cup to a cup of extra ingredients depending on your taste. Even if they don't set up, they are great to eat with a spoon. No batch goes uneaten at my house!

I've made this recipe since I was a teenager. They're in my mothers Betty Crocker recipe book. She received it as a wedding present in 1953. It is one of my favorite cookies, I can have a batch made up and gobbled up in no time!

I would love to know how to make these without the peanut butter. I've made this recipe for years, but my husband can't have the peanut butter anymore. Thanks.

 Jane (Maryland) says:
If I use 5 minute oatmeal, after I add the oatmeal, vanilla, and peanut butter I cook it for a few extra minutes on very low heat, stirring frequently, to improve the texture and allow the oatmeal to absorb the other ingredients so they harden better.

I was looking for this recipe, since I lost the one I had. A friend introduced me to these (without peanut butter) when I was around 22. They were delicious. I am 54 now. Her brother called them Moose Turds and so that is what we always called them. I also added coconut which makes them really yummy.

This recipe is awesome!!!!! I cooked for 3 minutes but I think 2 1/2 would be better if you like them fudgy!!!!! I'm also going to try 2/3 cup of peanut butter next time for a little more flavor!!!!! I also put them in the refidgerator as soon as I drop them on waxed paper, and once they are firm, I put them in an air tight container with plastic wrap between each layer!!!!! They are AWESOME when kept cold!!!!!

Substitute the vanilla for almond extract. Soooooooooo good. And I never put butter in my cookies and they taste amazing, just as a healthier option.
