CHOCOLATE CHIP DATE TORTE 
1 c. chopped dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/4 c. boiling water
1/4 c. white sugar
3/4 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. shortening
3 eggs, beaten
1 1/4 c. + 2 tbsp. flour
3/4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla
1 sm. pkg. chocolate chips

Combine dates, soda and boiling water. Set aside to cool. Cream sugar and shortening; add vanilla. Add beaten eggs and beat once more. Add dry ingredients and date mixture and mix until well blended. Pour mixture into a well greased 8 x 10 inch pan. Sprinkle chocolate chips over top. When cool, you may sprinkle with powdered sugar on top with whipped cream as a torte. Keeps well in refrigerator.
