CANDY CANE COOKIES 
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. butter
1 c. powdered sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp. almond extract
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. red food color
1/2 c. crushed peppermint candy
1/2 c. granulated sugar

Mix shortening, butter, sugar, egg and flavorings. Thoroughly mix flour and salt, stir into shortening mixture. Divide dough in half. Blend food coloring into half the dough. Roll in 4 inch strips, using 1 teaspoon of dough of each color. For smooth, even strips, roll back and forth on lightly floured board. Place side by side, press lightly together and twist like a rope. Do cookies one at a time. Shape into candy canes and bake at 350 degrees until light brown. While still warm, sprinkle with peppermint and sugar mixture.
