CANDY CANE COOKIES 
1/2 c. softened butter
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. powdered sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp. almond extract
1/2 c. crushed peppermint candy
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1/2 tsp. red food color
2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour

Mix thoroughly butter, shortening, powdered sugar, egg and flavorings. Blend in flour and salt. Divide dough in half; blend food color into one half.

Shape 1 teaspoon dough from each half into 4 inch rope. Roll back and forth on smooth surface. Place side by side, press together lightly and twist. Complete 1 at a time. Put on ungreased cookie sheet. Curve top down for handle of cane. Bake 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Mix candy and granulated sugar. Sprinkle on cookies immediately and remove from sheet.
