CANDY CANE COOKIES
1/2 c. soft shortening
1/2 c. soft butter
1 c. sifted confectioners' sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp. almond flavoring
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. red food coloring

Heat oven to 375 degrees. Mix well the shortening, butter, sugar, egg, flavorings. Mix flour and salt and stir into butter mix. Divide dough in half. Blend red food coloring into half. By hand, roll 1 teaspoon each color dough on lightly floured board into strips about 4 inches long.

Place strips side by side, press lightly together, and twist like a rope. Put on ungreased baking sheet. Curve top down for cane handle. Bake 9 minutes or until lightly brown. Remove gently from cookie sheets and while still warm, sprinkle with sugar. Makes about 4 1/2 dozen.

TIP: Make complete cookies, one at a time. If all dough of 1 color is shaped first, the little rolls become too dry to twist.
