BRAZILIAN COFFEE COOKIES 
1/3 c. shortening
1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 tbsp. milk
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
2 tbsp. powdered instant coffee

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Mix shortening, sugar, egg, vanilla and milk until fluffy. Stir remaining ingredients together and add to sugar mixture. Mix thoroughly. Shape into 1" balls. If dough is hard to handle, chill. Place balls 2" apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten to 1/8" thickness with greased fork dipped in sugar (press in one direction only) or with greased bottom of glass dipped in sugar. Bake 8 to 10 minutes. Makes 4 dozen.
