MEATBALLS IN TOMATO SAUCE 
SAUCE:

2 tbsp. olive oil
1 clove garlic (powdered is OK)
3/4 c. chopped onion
2 (10 oz.) cans tomato puree (2 1/2 c.)
1 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
1 bay leaf
2 tsp. sugar

Heat oil in saucepan. Add garlic and onion; cook over low heat until golden brown. Add tomato puree and seasonings. Bring to boil. Reduce heat; simmer 45 minutes. While sauce cooks, prepare meatballs.

MEATBALLS:

3 slices white bread
1/3 c. milk
1 lb. ground beef
2 eggs, unbeaten
1 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
1 clove garlic (or powdered)
2 tbsp. shortening

Break bread into mixing bowl. Add milk and let stand until milk is absorbed. Add meat, eggs and seasonings; blend. Shape into meatballs and fry in shortening. Add to sauce and simmer 45 minutes or more. Makes 4 servings.
