1 c. shortening 1 c. confectioners' sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tbsp. water 1 tbsp. vanilla 2 c. sifted all-purpose flour 1 1/4 c. chopped nut meats Cream shortening; must be half butter for flavor. Add confectioners' sugar gradually and salt, creaming well. Add water and vanilla and mix well. (May also add a few drops of almond flavoring. Add 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour gradually by hand. Add chopped nuts meats (walnuts or pecans) by hand. Chill 2 or 3 hours or overnight. Shape into balls, heaping teaspoon size. Place on ungreased baking sheet, flatten slightly. Bake in 325 degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes. Ovens may vary. Roll in confectioners' sugar while still warm. At Christmas time I add a few colored sugar crystals to the powdered sugar. These freeze well! Makes about 4 1/2 dozen cookies. |
