BEST EVER DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE 
Cake:

2 c. sugar
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. shortening
2 tbsp. cocoa (heaping)
3 eggs, well beaten
1 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 1 c. buttermilk
2 1/4 c. all-purpose or cake flour

Mix cloves, cinnamon and cocoa in sugar, then cream in shortening, beat eggs and cream, add buttermilk with baking soda dissolved in it alternating with flour. Beat on medium speed about two minutes.

Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.

Icing:

2 c. sugar
1 c. sweet milk
1 stick of butter
1 tbsp. vanilla

Boil sugar and milk until a soft ball will form when dropped in cold water. Add 1 stick of butter cutting off 1 tbsp. of the stick. Add 1 tbsp. vanilla. Beat until smooth and cool enough to spread on cake layers.
