PEANUT BUTTER SHORTIES
1 c. peanut butter
1/2 c. soft shortening
1 c. brown sugar, packed
1 c. granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. sift flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt

In a large bowl thoroughly blend peanut butter, shortening, both sugars, eggs, and vanilla. Sift flour, soda, and salt together. Add flour mixture gradually to first mixture, stirring until well mixed.

Form into 1-inch balls, place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheet and flatten with fork in criss-cross pattern. Or, flatten balls with bottom of a small glass dipped in granulated sugar. If you prefer, roll balls in finely chopped peanuts before flattening.

For all cooky forms, bake in moderate oven (350 degrees) 7 to 12 minutes (depending on thickness) until golden brown. Sprinkle with sugar. Let stand 1 minute, then remove to cooling rack. Cool completely before storing in a tightly covered container. Recipe makes about 5 dozen 2 1/2 inch cookies. Erma M. Winner.
