2 c. baking molasses 1 c. melted shortening 1/2 c. sour milk or buttermilk 2 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. ginger 1/2 tsp. cloves 3 c. flour 1 tsp. salt 1 tbsp. baking soda 1 egg 2 tbsp. sweet milk Flour to make rolling batter In large mixing bowl place the molasses, melted shortening and stir. Sift together all the dry ingredients except soda. Add soda to sour milk. Stir until it foams up, then add to molasses and shortening. Now add dry ingredients one at a time. Mix thoroughly, add more flour until the batter is stiff enough to roll. Prepare the glaze by beating egg and adding the 2 tablespoons of milk to it. After cutting out a dozen or two cookies, with teaspoon moisten a cookie with milk- egg mixture. Have a saucer ready with about 3/4 cup sugar in it. Put the moistened side of the cookie on the sugar, then pick up the cookie and put on the cookie sheet. Continue until sheet is full. Bake at 400 degrees. Give the cookies room to spread. They are done when the sugar glaze is lightly brown. This recipe will make about 6 dozen large cookies. If you have no sour milk, you may put 1 tablespoon vinegar in a cup and fill it half full of sweet milk. |
