1 c. sugar
1 tbsp. shortening
2 eggs
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. baking powder
1 c. buttermilk or sour milk
3 c. flour
1 tsp. vanilla
Pinch of nutmeg

Mix all ingredients together thoroughly. Put dough in doughnut maker and drop into hot oil. Turn quickly - do it several times.
