BUTTERLESS, EGGLESS, MILKLESS
CAKE
 
1 c. brown sugar, packed
1/3 c. shortening or lard
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 1/4 c. water
2-3 c. raisins
1 tsp. salt
2 c. flour
2 tsp. cinnamon

Boil brown sugar, 1 1/4 cups water, shortening, raisins and spices for 3 minutes. Cool, add salt and baking soda which has been dissolved in 2 teaspoons water. Gradually add the flour and baking powders, beating smooth after each addition. Bake in greased and floured 8 x 8 x 2 inch pan in 325 degree oven for 50 minutes or until done. Needs no frosting.
