HARVEST APPLE CRISP 
2 c. flour
3/4 c. white sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
4 to 6 apples, peeled and sliced

Mix flour, salt and baking powder. Set aside. Cream shortening, add white sugar. Add egg and vanilla and beat. Add flour mixture to creamed mixture and mix until just crumbly. Put 1/2 of the mixture in an ungreased 8 to 9 inch square oblong pan. Pat down lightly to form a crust. Place sliced apples on top. Combine nutmeg and brown sugar. Sprinkle over apples. Top with remaining crumb mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. NOTE: For spicy topping, sprinkle a little extra nutmeg over crumb topping before baking.
