6 egg whites 1 1/2 tsp. lemon juice or cream of tartar 2 c. white sugar FILLING: 1 pt. whipping cream 1/2 c. maraschino cherries, cut in fourths 1/2 c. walnuts, cut up Beat egg whites until frothy. Add sugar in small amounts, until all has been added and all grains of sugar have been dissolved. Add lemon juice, put in 2 (9 inch) layer pans lined with brown paper, making an extra rim, making it easier to remove from pans. Bake at 275 degrees 60 minutes. Cool in pans before removing. Whip cream until stiff. To scant half add cut up cherries and nuts for filling between layers. Cover top and sides with remaining whipped cream. Decorate with half cherries. Chill. Serves 12. Cool in pans before removing. |
