1 c. shortening
3 c. sugar
1 c. buttermilk
5 eggs
3 c. flour
2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt

Cream shortening and sugar together 20 minutes.

Add remaining ingredients; blend well. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour.
