OLD TIME BEEF STEW
2 tbsp. oil
2 lbs. beef chuck, cut in sm. cubes
1 med. onion, sliced
1 clove garlic
2 c. boiling water
1 tbsp. salt
1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp. paprika
1 or 2 bay leaves
Dash allspice or cloves
6 carrots
1 lb. sm. white onions
6 med. potatoes

In large pot, brown beef in heated oil. Add sliced onion along with garlic, boiling water, salt and pepper, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, bay leaf, allspice or cloves. Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours. (Stir often to prevent sticking).

Add cut vegetables. Cover and simmer about 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender. If desired, thicken liquid by blending flour and water, then stir in mixture, until gravy boils and thickens. Serves 6 to 8 people.
