MA'S BROWN BREAD 
3 tbsp. butter, softened
1 c. sugar
2 c. buttermilk or sour milk
1/3 c. dark molasses
1 egg
2 1/2 c. graham or whole wheat flour
3/4 c. all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 c. raisins
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Beat butter and sugar together until creamy. Mix in buttermilk and molasses. Beat in egg.

In separate bowl mix 2 cups graham flour, all-purpose flour, salt and baking soda. Add to batter and beat until well combined. Mix remaining 1/2 cup graham flour, raisins and nuts. Stir into batter.

Spoon batter into a well greased 9 x 5 inch loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour until bread begins to pull away from sides of pan. Let cool in pan 10 minutes. Then turn out onto a rack to cool completely.
