RICH CHOCOLATE SPICE BARS
2 tbsp. butter
2 eggs
2 tbsp. molasses
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground allspice
1/2 c. sifted confectioners' sugar
1 sq. unsweetened chocolate
1 c. firmly packed light brown sugar
1 c. sifted all purpose flour
1/4 tsp. salt (may be left out)
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
3/4 c. ground hazelnuts or almonds
2 tsp. water

Melt butter and chocolate in small saucepan over very low heat, cool slightly.

Beat eggs until thick and foamy; gradually beat in brown sugar. Stir in butter and chocolate mixture with molasses.

Stir flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves and allspice on waxed paper. Add to egg mixture with 1/2 cup of the nuts; mix well. Turn into a greased 9 inch square baking pan.

Bake in a moderate 350 degree oven for 30 minutes or until a cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack.

Combine confectioners' sugar with water; spread over bars while still warm. Sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup nuts; press lightly into glaze. Cut into 24 (2 x 1 1/4 inch) bars when cool. Garnish with chocolate curls, if you wish, (takes time to make these, but they are well worth the time).
